In an old town stands an old house with a leaky roof. The owner manages this issue by placing a bucket under the leak, emptying it when full. To him, this seems efficient, but we can recognise that merely addresses the symptom, not the source
This story reflects the basic but often unrecognised coaching dilemma: address presenting symptoms, or tackle root causes. Most coaches unwittingly choose the former, playing whack-a-mole with a symptoms while core issues persist.
Imagine David, who struggles with delegation stating ‘I need to stay in control’. Using traditional methods he and his coach develop a solution based on helping David to ‘let go’ of his need to control when delegating [Influence Motive]. Later David struggles with conflict with his peers citing a need to ‘be allowed to own his area of the business’. This time his coach helps David to recognise the impact of his area on the rest of the business [Global Information Size]. Even later David conveys a problem with some recent hires which he and his coach attribute to putting too much [Trust] in what candidates tell him. What David’s coach doesn’t realise is that all these interventions aren’t successes, they are just emptying the metaphorical bucket. ‘Fixing the roof’ would require recognising and addressing what underlies all of these issues, and many more that David will undoubtedly come to his coach for help with: his bias toward an [Internal Frame of Reference].
Sealing leaks requires more effort but yields incomparable rewards. By addressing root causes, we prevent future problems. As coaches, we choose: perpetual moppers or transformative sealers. Our choice shapes our clients' journeys and defines our coaching legacy.
